Rocket Math

The Second Graders are working on memorizing all of the basic Addition Math Facts. We are practicing every day and taking a 1-minute practice test. Our class goal is 40+ facts per minute. Individual students have individual goals.

Students may practice at home using the online version of Rocket Math. Unfortunately, it does not work with our school iPads (iPad 2) but if you have a newer iPad at home, or a computer that students can use, it is a great resource.

The program only allows for 5 minutes of practice at a time, with a short “breather.’

The user names and passwords are the same as Gradelink. Our family name is OLL.

THANK YOU to all Second Graders who came and participated in Sunday’s Mass. You sounded and looked fabulous! Everyone did a great job on both Friday and Sunday.

Thank you to Layla’s dad for bringing our buddies and us donuts on Friday. We enjoyed the treat.

Monday: Field Trip to Soraya at CSUN.

We will be leaving immediately after the morning pledge and prayer. Students should bring a small snack that they can carry as we walk.

We will eat our snack before we go into the theater. A bag of cookies or chips would be perfect. Students may also bring a small drink, although there is a water fountain at the theater. No food or drink are allowed inside, so we must throw everything away before we enter.

Thursday: We will be planting in the garden with our buddies. Thank you to

Sergio’s mom for getting us bulbs and seeds to plant.

Friday: Religion Quiz Chapter 6

Spelling Review Test: We will have 6 dictation sentences that include

some of the words above. Students will not be spelling ALL of the list.

MATH FACTS:

Students must have their basic addition and subtraction facts to 20 memorized. The basic addition and subtraction facts are all the combinations of 1-digit numbers (2+2, 6+9, 8+4, etc.) and the corresponding subtraction exercises (18-9, 7-4, etc.). (See the fact chart at the end of this page.) To you, these are probably automatic. You don't need to think about them because you've memorized the answers. That immediate command is what we want for our students.

There are a variety of ways you can help at home.

  1. Practice with math flash cards 3-5 minutes a day.

Print flash cards from my teacher page online.

You can purchase flash cards through Amazon

Addition 0 to 12 (Brighter Child Flash Cards) $2.62

Subtraction 0 to 12 Flash Cards (Brighter Child Flash Cards) $2.99

Target frequently has flash cards in their dollar bin

2. Online games: abcya.com has many free games, but you must use a computer (not ipad)

Reflex math is a very good game for students to memorize their facts. You can sign up

for a 30 day free trial to check it out.

Apps on the iPad

We will be starting a program called Rocket Math. More information will be coming home soon.

We will be practicing everyday in class and on Tuesdays will have a timed math facts test. We are going to start with facts 0-5.

Morning Meeting:

Parents, we would love to have you stop in and join us for our morning meeting, any day, Tuesday – Friday. Just come in and tell me you would like to stay for morning meeting. It might be especially nice if you came during your child’s “Student of the Week” week, but you are always welcome.

Shoe laces:

Please help your child come to school with their shoes tied. Many shoes have round laces that are hard to keep tied. It would help to do a double knot to keep them tied. Thanks for your help.

Reading Fluency:

Please remember to read on 3 different evenings with your child and sign their fluency. Also, encourage them to use their neatest printing when completing the questions – and always use a pencil.

SLEEP:

Remember, second graders need 9-11 hours of sleep each night to do their best each day. Please adjust their school night bedtime accordingly.

Looking Ahead:

Second and Eighth grades will be leading the first Friday and Sunday masses in October. Mark your calendar for the 9 o’clock mass on both October 5th and 7th.

We have STAR testing this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Each day we take one 15-20 minute test. Second Graders will take the Early Literacy, Reading and Math tests. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats a good breakfast.

1-minute Reading Fluency

Second graders will have reading fluency homework each week. You may juggle the nights based on your schedule but typically:

Monday night: read the entire selection with your child. Then time them for one minute. Parents write the number of words read and add your signature/initials.

Tuesday and Wednesday nights: time your child for 1 minute, write the number of words read and initial.

Thursday night: Reread entire selection and answer comprehension questions on the back

Friday: Bring to school and turn in.

Homework PLANNER:

Second graders will be writing down their homework each afternoon and bringing home their planner. Please help them look at their planner each night to check and be sure they have complete all of their homework.

HOMEWORK:

Every afternoon, second graders write down their homework and gather the materials they will need. This process takes 15-20 minutes. If your child needs to leave early (before 2:30) please let me know ahead of time, so that they can get their homework organized early.

Looking Ahead: NEXT week:

Monday, Sept 3: Labor Day. No School

Thursday, Sept 6: Back to School Night
